Uninstall VISTA, reinstall Windows XPThis is a featured page

Windows VISTA Uninstalled At Last

I had installed Windows VISTA Beta version with a dual boot option so that I could alternatively use my Windows XP. But just after two days, to my horror, I was unable to boot into my Windows XP partition. I was doomed. The only thing I had transferred was my TCP/ IP settings. However, I had copied the data from the My Documents folder to a different drive.

The next thing I tried was to reinstall Windows XP. I was in a for a shock: I was unable to boot from my XP CD.

What actually happens is that after loading VISTA, the MBR is written as of VISTA's and hence you cannot boot from the XP CD.

I tried several other things, but I failed. I tried to boot from the Windows 2003 Server Edition CD. It was successful but however, I could not install in the partition that VISTA used. I had to install it in a different drive. It helped, but then, I wanted my Windows XP.

I STRIKE GOLD!

After installing Windows 2003 Server, I decided to boot from the Windows 2003 Server CD again. But this time instead of choosing the partition, I delete the partition housing VISTA. Then I went ahead with installing Win 2003 Server. After that, I again try to boot from the Windows XP CD and guess what? I was successful.

To sum it up- to uninstall Windows Vista and reinstalling XP, you have to:

1) Boot from the Windows 2003 Server Edition CD

2) While choosing the partition at the menu, delete partition housing VISTA ( you have to format the partition choosing NTFS )

3) Install on that partition Win 2003 Server ( Standard )

4) After the installation of Win 2003 Server, boot again using the Windows XP CD and again delete the parttion housing the 2003 Server and install XP in the same partition

5) Voila! You are able to install Win XP once again

PS: From the BIOS, select the CD/ DVD Rom as the FIRST BOOT and then start the boot process

Thats great for all those people with a copy of Windows 2003 server. I can boot from the XP CD and try an install, however it tells me that the pasrtion I delete/recreate is not a Windows XP compatible partition. I have tried doing this with XP, partions Magic and many variations of partion manager but still nosucces. I even used the repair MBR functions. Still no success. Perhaps some readint this can help as obviously you only know one way!
